New Beginnings Learning Academy Garden
We work side by side with the staff and kids at the Dr. Theresa Stafford New Beginnings Learning Academy to help achieve its mission to provide a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for children and families in vulnerable and under-resourced communities.
Nourishing Growing Minds and Bodies
Each week, up to 60 kids at New Beginnings plant, water, weed, taste, and learn what it means to grow food — and to grow together. The garden has become a joyful space where they build confidence, practice teamwork, and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
To keep this going, the site needs basic infrastructure. The water supply is behind a locked door, there are no tools or materials, and nowhere safe to store them. With a little support, we can turn this into a fully functioning, year-round garden classroom.
Your gift will help us install an outdoor yard hydrant, add a sturdy garden shed, purchase kid-friendly tools and supplies, and build an additional raised bed.
Gardening gives kids time outdoors, hands-on learning, and a deeper understanding of nutrition in a neighborhood where fresh, healthy food is limited. Their families benefit too — through free produce, shared meals, and the pride of eating something grown with their own hands.
Your support helps provide stability, nourishment, and real opportunities for young people who deserve every chance to thrive.
Donors of $100 or more will receive seed packs decorated by the kids — okra, sunflowers, kale, and marigolds harvested from their own garden.

Cultivating Future Gardeners and Healthy Lifestyles
Working alongside the New Beginnings staff, we guide the kids through weekly hands-on activities in gardening, cooking, nutrition, and the arts.
In our 2025 garden, the kids planted tomatoes, basil, sunflowers, corn, melons, “garden eggs,” okra, herbs, and flowers. Together, we turned the harvest into salads, pesto, and pickled tomatoes for the kids to enjoy, and shared the remaining produce with neighbors in the surrounding community, where access to fresh, healthy food is limited.
